Google Maps can save an area to your phone so you can view the map and use driving navigation when mobile data is weak or unavailable. Download the area before the journey, while you have a reliable internet connection, and make sure the complete driving route fits inside the saved map.
An offline map is most useful for an airport transfer, a rental-car route or a destination where coverage may be inconsistent. It is a backup rather than a full replacement for connectivity: live traffic, alternative routes, walking directions, cycling directions and public-transport navigation are not available while Google Maps is offline.
NoveSIM travel eSIMs provide mobile data. We do not provide a local telephone number, conventional mobile calls or carrier SMS. A data connection complements an offline map by restoring current traffic, new searches, route changes, ride-hailing and transport updates.
Quick answer: In Google Maps, tap your profile picture, choose Offline maps, select Select your own map, frame the area you need and tap Download. Keep the app open until the download finishes, then test it with mobile data and Wi-Fi temporarily switched off. For offline driving navigation, download enough territory to contain the entire route, not only the destination.

What Google Maps can do without an internet connection
A downloaded map stores road and place information for the selected area on the phone. If reception disappears, Google Maps can still show that area and guide a driving route that remains inside it. The phone’s GPS can estimate your position independently of mobile data, although tunnels, dense buildings and other local conditions can affect positioning.
The offline version does not preserve every online feature. Plan around the distinction before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.
| Task | Available offline? | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| View the downloaded area | Yes | Save every part of the journey you may need |
| Driving directions within the saved area | Yes | Make sure the complete route is inside the download |
| Live traffic and alternative routes | No | Check conditions while online before departure |
| Walking and cycling directions | No | Save the address, route notes or screenshots separately |
| Public-transport directions | No | Save line, stop and interchange details before going offline |
| New information outside the saved area | No | Download a larger area or another map in advance |
If navigation is essential, use the two-layer approach in our guide to eSIMs for maps and navigation: keep an offline route for continuity, then use mobile data for information that changes.
How to download an offline Google Map on iPhone or iPad
Connect the device to the internet and open Google Maps outside Incognito mode. Google provides two download routes; selecting your own area is usually clearer for a journey with several stops.
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map.
- Move and zoom the frame until it covers the airport, accommodation, planned roads and any likely detour.
- Check the estimated storage requirement shown on screen.
- Tap Download and wait for the map to finish saving.
You can also search for a place, tap its name or address at the bottom of the screen, open the More menu and choose Download offline map where that option is available.
How to download an offline Google Map on Android
The main Android path is similar, but Android also lets compatible devices save offline maps to an SD card. If you later change the storage location, Google says the map must be downloaded again.
- Connect to the internet, sign in to Google Maps and open the app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Offline maps.
- Tap Select your own map.
- Adjust the frame to include the full driving corridor and surrounding area.
- Tap Download.
- Leave enough time and storage for the download to complete before travelling.
To change the Android storage location, open Offline maps, tap its settings icon and review Storage preferences. An SD card must be supported and configured as portable storage. Do not move a map immediately before departure without downloading and testing it again.
Choose the downloaded area around the journey
The smallest useful map is not always the cheapest in storage. A tight rectangle around a city may omit the airport road, a motorway diversion or the next town. A very large area, however, can consume space and take longer to update. Frame the map around the decisions you may actually need to make.
- Include the arrival airport, station or port and the first accommodation.
- Cover the full road between them, not only the two endpoints.
- Add planned day trips, fuel or charging stops and the return route.
- Allow space around mountain roads, islands or border areas where a diversion may be long.
- Use separate downloads when one rectangle would include a large irrelevant area.
Save the accommodation address, booking reference and first transfer outside Google Maps as well. The offline travel checklist covers the documents and arrival details that should remain accessible even if the phone has no connection.
Test the map before relying on it
A visible download in the list is not enough evidence that it covers the intended route. Test the practical task while you are still somewhere safe with Wi-Fi available as a fallback.
- Open Offline maps and confirm the required area appears in the list.
- Temporarily switch off both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Open Google Maps and find the destination by its saved name or address.
- Request driving directions from a point inside the downloaded area.
- Zoom along the route and check that the airport, accommodation and key roads are visible.
- Restore connectivity after the test.
Repeat the check after changing phones, clearing app storage or reinstalling Google Maps. Downloads stored by the app should not be treated as permanent travel files.
Use the map during a drive
Set the destination and review the route before moving. When the connection drops, Google Maps can continue offline driving guidance if the route remains within the downloaded area. It cannot obtain fresh traffic conditions or offer the same live alternatives, so a closure encountered on the road may require a connection or a safe place to stop and reassess.
Keep the phone charged. Continuous location use, a bright screen and weak-signal searching can drain the battery during a long journey. Mount the phone safely and change the route only while parked or through a passenger.
Prepare walking and public-transport journeys differently
Downloading the city does not enable offline walking, cycling or transit directions. For a metro, bus or rail journey, save the line number, direction, boarding stop, interchange and final stop while online. For the last walking section, keep a screenshot or simple written sequence as well as the destination pin.
Mobile data is particularly valuable when a platform changes, a service is cancelled or the traveller must search for a new route. If the connection fails unexpectedly, the steps in what to do when there is no internet abroad help separate a coverage gap from a phone or eSIM setting problem.
Keep offline maps updated
Downloaded maps must be updated before they expire. Google Maps normally tries to update an area automatically over Wi-Fi when it is close to expiry, but that depends on the app being able to complete the update. Before a trip, open Offline maps and check the status yourself.
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Offline maps.
- Tap an expired or expiring area.
- Choose Update.
- Wait for the update to finish and test the area again.
Delete old destinations when storage becomes limited. Rename current maps by trip or region so that it is obvious which area needs updating.
Why an offline map may be missing or incomplete
If the download option is absent, first check that the app is current, the device is online and there is enough storage. On iPhone and iPad, leave Incognito mode. On Android, confirm that you are signed in. Google also notes that offline-map downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats or other reasons.
If a saved map opens but cannot build the route, check whether either endpoint or part of the road falls outside its boundary. The practical fix is often to download a neighbouring area while online, rather than repeatedly changing location settings.
When a travel eSIM still helps
Offline maps reduce the risk of becoming lost, but they do not answer every live travel question. A working data connection restores traffic, rerouting, business information, public-transport results, ride-hailing, accommodation messages and searches beyond the downloaded boundary.
Choose an allowance based on the whole trip rather than maps alone. Messaging, cloud photo backup and video usually affect consumption more than basic navigation. The travel app data-usage guide helps identify the applications worth restricting, while the travel data plan guide explains how to match coverage and validity to an itinerary.
Before departure, confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked using the NoveSIM compatible-device list. If retaining the home SIM, prevent unintended roaming by selecting the travel eSIM for mobile data and reviewing the settings in our eSIM roaming-charge guide.

FAQ
Can I use Google Maps offline without mobile data?
Yes. After downloading the required area, you can view it and use driving navigation for a route contained within that area. Walking, cycling and public-transport directions are unavailable offline.
Why is Google Maps not showing traffic while offline?
Traffic information and alternative routes require an internet connection. Check the route while online before departure, and reconnect when conditions change or a road is closed.
How large an area should I download?
Include the complete journey: arrival point, accommodation, connecting roads, day trips and reasonable diversion space. Use several smaller maps if one large rectangle would waste storage.
Do downloaded Google Maps expire?
They need periodic updates before expiry. Google Maps may update them automatically over Wi-Fi, but you should open Offline maps and confirm their status before travelling.
Final Recommendation
Download Google Maps around the complete route, not just the destination, and test the saved area with Wi-Fi and mobile data temporarily switched off. Keep screenshots or written details for walking and public-transport stages because those directions are not available offline.
Update the map shortly before departure, retain a separate copy of the accommodation address and carry enough battery for the journey. Treat the download as the stable layer of the plan and mobile data as the source of live changes.
A travel eSIM is still useful for traffic, new searches, rerouting, transport information and messages outside the saved map. Combining the two gives a traveller continuity when coverage weakens without giving up current information when a network is available.
