Why Is My eSIM Not Making Calls?

An eSIM may provide mobile data without supporting ordinary carrier calls. Before changing settings, check whether the purchased plan includes a telephone number and voice service.

On a dual-SIM phone, calls may also fail because the wrong line is selected as the default voice line or because the voice carrier has no roaming service.

NoveSIM travel eSIMs are data-only. We do not provide a local number, conventional calls or SMS.

Quick answer: If the eSIM is data-only, use a supported internet-calling app or place the carrier call through a separate voice SIM. If the plan includes voice, confirm activation, signal and the default call line, then contact the voice carrier if normal calls still fail.

Does the eSIM Include Voice Service?

“eSIM” describes the SIM format, not the included services. Some carrier eSIMs include a number, calls and SMS; many travel eSIMs provide data only. Check the product description and order confirmation first.

Select the Correct Line for Calls

On iPhone, open Cellular settings and check the Default Voice Line. You can also select a line from the Phone app before dialling. On Pixel, choose the default under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Calls. Samsung uses Preferred SIMs in SIM Manager.

Choosing the travel eSIM for Mobile Data does not automatically make it a voice line.

If the Voice eSIM Has No Signal

  1. Confirm the voice plan is active and the line is switched on.
  2. Return Network Selection to Automatic.
  3. Refresh with Airplane Mode, then restart once.
  4. Check whether the carrier supports roaming at the current destination.
  5. Test incoming and outgoing calls separately.

Do not delete the eSIM. Contact the carrier that issued the telephone number when provisioning or calling remains unavailable.

Use Internet Calling with a Data eSIM

Supported services such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Teams can make calls through mobile data where the app is available. Both participants may need the app, and app availability varies by destination. This is not the same as calling an ordinary number through the mobile carrier.

Keep the Primary Number with Travel Data

A compatible dual-SIM phone can retain the primary line for calls while NoveSIM supplies data. Select the primary line for voice, the travel eSIM for Mobile Data, and disable automatic data switching. Check the primary carrier’s roaming prices because calls and voicemail may cost extra.

See how to retain your number and verify that the primary SIM remains active.

FAQ

Why can I use data but not make calls?

The eSIM may be data-only. Data service does not imply a telephone number or carrier voice service.

Can I call with a NoveSIM eSIM?

You can use supported internet-calling apps over data, but we do not provide conventional carrier calls.

Can my normal SIM handle calls while eSIM handles data?

Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Configure the default voice and data lines separately.

Should I turn on Data Roaming to make calls?

Data Roaming concerns mobile data. Carrier voice roaming depends on the voice provider and plan.

Final Recommendation

Check the purchased service before troubleshooting. A data-only eSIM is behaving normally when ordinary calls are unavailable.

Use the primary voice line or a supported internet-calling app, and direct number or carrier-call failures to the provider responsible for that line.

This avoids changing a working data profile in an attempt to enable a voice service that the product never included.
