Arriving traveller enabling a travel eSIM.

How to Activate Your Uganda eSIM

Activate your Uganda eSIM after arrival by turning on the NoveSIM line, selecting it for mobile data and enabling Data Roaming for that travel profile. Leave network selection on Automatic and allow the phone several minutes to register.

NoveSIM currently states that plan validity begins when Data Roaming is enabled and the eSIM connects to a supported local network in the destination. Installing the profile before the journey is therefore different from activating it for use in Uganda.

NoveSIM Uganda plans are data-only. They do not include a Ugandan telephone number, traditional voice calls or carrier SMS, but internet calling and messaging applications can work through the data connection.

Quick answer: After landing, open the phone’s SIM settings, enable the labelled NoveSIM profile, choose it as the mobile-data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line. Switch Wi-Fi off and load a new webpage; this proves that the Uganda eSIM is carrying mobile data.

What must be completed before activation?

The NoveSIM profile should already be installed on a compatible carrier-unlocked phone. If it does not appear in the phone’s SIM settings, activation cannot begin because there is no travel profile to enable.

  • Confirm that the NoveSIM profile appears as a separate SIM line.
  • Keep the purchase email and current plan instructions available.
  • Check that the phone is physically in Uganda or another destination covered by the selected plan.
  • Ensure that the plan should be valid on the current travel date.
  • Keep enough battery power for registration and testing.

If the profile still needs to be added, use the separate instructions to install an eSIM for Uganda. Do not purchase the same plan again merely because the installed profile has not yet registered.

Installation, activation and registration are different

These stages are often treated as one process, but separating them makes a failed connection much easier to diagnose.

Stage What it establishes
Installation The NoveSIM profile has downloaded and appears in the phone settings
Activation The travel line is enabled under the plan’s applicable start conditions
Network registration The profile has joined a permitted local partner network
Mobile-data test A webpage loads through NoveSIM while Wi-Fi is disabled

A profile can be installed successfully before departure while showing no Ugandan network. Conversely, a signal icon after arrival does not prove that the phone is using NoveSIM for data. Each stage answers a different question.

When should you activate the Uganda plan?

Install before travel, but complete the live activation settings when you arrive and need the plan. According to NoveSIM’s current FAQ, the data period starts counting when Data Roaming is enabled and the eSIM connects to a supported local network in the destination.

Do not enable the travel line early merely to see whether it can find service outside the covered destination. Keep the order instructions because the live terms supplied with the selected plan take priority if the activation policy changes.

Count arrival and departure days when choosing validity. A plan may be needed immediately for an airport transfer even when the landing occurs late in the evening. Compare the current Uganda eSIM plans against the exact itinerary rather than counting hotel nights alone.

How to activate a Uganda eSIM on iPhone

Menu wording varies between iOS versions and regions. The mobile section may be called Cellular, Mobile Data or Mobile Service.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Cellular, Mobile Data or Mobile Service.
  3. Tap the line labelled NoveSIM or Uganda.
  4. Enable Turn On This Line.
  5. Turn on Data Roaming for the NoveSIM line.

  10. Wait several minutes, turn Wi-Fi off and open a new webpage.

The Uganda eSIM guide for iPhone explains line labels, dual-SIM calls and data switching in greater detail.

How to activate a Uganda eSIM on Android

Android menu names differ by manufacturer. Look under Connections, SIM Manager, Network & Internet, SIMs or Mobile Network.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open the phone’s SIM, connections or mobile-network section.
  3. Select the installed NoveSIM or Uganda profile.
  4. Turn the eSIM line on.
  5. Choose NoveSIM as the preferred SIM for mobile data.
  6. Enable Data Roaming for NoveSIM.
  7. Disable automatic data switching or backup data on the primary SIM where the option exists.
  8. Leave network or operator selection on Automatic.
  9. Wait several minutes for registration.
  10. Disable Wi-Fi and load a new webpage.

On Samsung Galaxy phones, these controls commonly appear under Settings → Connections → SIM Manager. Pixel and other phones may place them under Network & Internet → SIMs. Follow the Uganda eSIM guide for Android when the device uses different labels.

Which SIM should handle calls, messages and data?

The normal dual-SIM arrangement keeps the primary SIM available for its existing telephone number while NoveSIM handles mobile data. Actual dual-SIM capabilities depend on the exact phone model and regional variant.

Phone function Recommended line
Mobile data NoveSIM Uganda eSIM
Traditional incoming calls Primary SIM, if needed and supported
Carrier SMS Primary SIM, subject to home-carrier terms
WhatsApp and internet calling Existing application account using NoveSIM data
Data Roaming On for NoveSIM; off for the primary SIM when avoiding home-line roaming
Automatic data switching Off when the primary SIM must not carry data

Keeping the primary line active can still create home-carrier charges for calls, SMS or other roaming services. Review the guide to roaming charges in Uganda before deciding which primary-line functions should remain enabled.

How do you confirm that activation worked?

A visible network name, signal bars or 4G symbol proves only part of the connection. Wi-Fi can also hide a mobile-data problem because applications continue working through the wireless network.

  1. Confirm that NoveSIM is selected for mobile data.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi completely off.
  3. Close any previously loaded webpage.
  4. Open a browser and request a new page.
  5. Send a new message or refresh a lightweight application.
  6. Check that the primary SIM has not become the active data line.

If the new page loads, the travel data path is working. Avoid repeated speed tests because they can consume more data than a normal connectivity check. The Uganda mobile-data guide covers application usage and background traffic.

How long should network registration take?

NoveSIM advises that activation usually completes within a few minutes, although it can take approximately 5–10 minutes on some devices depending on the connection and local network availability. Treat that as a normal waiting period rather than an exact guarantee.

Keep network selection on Automatic while the phone searches. Moving outdoors or away from a heavily shielded part of the airport can help when indoor reception is poor. Coverage depends on the selected plan, permitted partner network, phone, region and live local conditions.

Review the Uganda eSIM coverage guide before interpreting a weak signal as an activation failure. An unlimited or large data allowance does not improve signal availability.

What if the eSIM does not connect immediately?

Check one variable at a time. Begin with the activation settings rather than reinstalling the profile or manually selecting random networks.

  1. Confirm that the NoveSIM profile is present and enabled.
  2. Confirm that NoveSIM is selected for mobile data.
  3. Confirm that Data Roaming is on for NoveSIM.
  4. Confirm that automatic data switching is off.
  5. Leave network selection on Automatic and wait up to 10 minutes.
  6. Turn Aeroplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then turn it off once.
  7. Restart the phone if registration still does not occur.
  8. Test again with Wi-Fi disabled.

Do not delete the installed eSIM. If the line exists but remains offline, continue with the structured guide for a Uganda eSIM that is not working.

When should you check the APN?

APN entry is not the first activation step. Check it only after confirming the installed line, mobile-data selection, Data Roaming and automatic network registration.

When manual entry is required, the NoveSIM APN is data.esim. Do not use a domestic Ugandan operator’s APN or a value copied from another provider. Leave username and password fields unchanged unless the current NoveSIM instructions specify otherwise.

Use the exact paths in the Uganda eSIM APN settings guide and then perform the same Wi-Fi-off webpage test.

When is manual network selection appropriate?

Manual selection is a diagnostic step, not the normal activation method. A network shown in a scan is not necessarily one that the selected plan is permitted to register on.

Try it only after the normal settings have been confirmed, Automatic selection has had time to work and current plan information identifies a permitted partner. Follow the manual network selection guide for Uganda, then return the phone to Automatic unless NoveSIM support advises otherwise.

What information should you send to support?

A precise report reduces repeated questions and helps distinguish activation, registration and data-path problems.

  • NoveSIM order reference without sharing the QR code publicly.
  • Exact phone model and regional variant.
  • Current town or area in Uganda.
  • Whether the NoveSIM profile appears and is enabled.
  • Whether Data Roaming is enabled for that line.
  • Which SIM is selected for mobile data.
  • The displayed network name or error message.
  • Whether a new webpage loads with Wi-Fi off.
  • The steps already attempted.

Keep the profile installed while support reviews the case. If the connection exists but performs poorly, use the separate checks for slow mobile data in Uganda.

FAQ

How do I activate my NoveSIM Uganda eSIM?

After arrival, enable the NoveSIM line, select it for mobile data, turn on Data Roaming for that line and leave network selection on Automatic. Test a new webpage with Wi-Fi off.

When does the Uganda plan start counting?

NoveSIM currently states that the plan starts when Data Roaming is enabled and the eSIM connects to a supported local network in the destination. Keep the current order terms because activation policies can change.

Can I activate the Uganda eSIM before travelling?

Install the profile before travel, but wait until arrival to complete the live data settings unless the supplied plan instructions say otherwise. A Ugandan partner network will not normally be available outside the covered destination.

Why does the eSIM show no service after installation?

If you are not yet in Uganda, that can be normal. After arrival, confirm that the line is enabled, selected for data and allowed to use Data Roaming, then wait for automatic registration.

Should Data Roaming be on for NoveSIM?

Yes, enable Data Roaming for the NoveSIM travel line when the plan should connect. Keep roaming off for the primary SIM if you want to prevent home-carrier data use.

How long does activation take?

It normally takes a few minutes. NoveSIM notes that some devices may need approximately 5–10 minutes depending on the connection and local network availability.

What APN should I use?

Use data.esim only when manual APN entry is required. Check the data line, roaming and automatic registration before changing the APN.

Should I delete the eSIM if activation fails?

No. Keep the profile installed and check the line, roaming, data selection, coverage and APN. Delete it only if NoveSIM support explicitly instructs you to do so.

Final Recommendation

Install the NoveSIM profile before departure, but activate the Uganda data connection after arrival according to the current order instructions. Keep the profile clearly labelled so it is easy to distinguish from the primary SIM.

Enable NoveSIM, select it for mobile data, turn on Data Roaming for that line and disable automatic data switching. Leave network selection on Automatic and allow several minutes for registration.

Prove the connection by opening a new webpage with Wi-Fi off. If the test fails, preserve the installed eSIM and check one setting at a time before moving to APN or manual-network diagnostics.
