Macau SIM Cards: Local Number or Data-Only eSIM?

Macau SIM cards can provide a local telephone line as well as mobile internet, but the exact product matters. A CTM prepaid calling line and a data-only travel eSIM are different purchases. Choose around whether you need ordinary calls and SMS, rather than assuming that every local SIM or eSIM includes them.

The local market is also changing. Hutchison Telephone (Macau), known as 3 Macau, has announced that it will stop providing mobile communication services after 30 November 2026 following its acquisition by CTM. Older SoSIM comparisons should not decide a new purchase without checking the transition arrangements.

At NoveSIM, we supply travel mobile data without a Macau telephone number, standard voice calls or carrier SMS. Your existing internet messaging accounts can use the connection. If a hotel or another contact requires an ordinary telephone call, arrange an appropriate calling service separately.

Quick answer: Investigate CTM prepaid when you need a Macau number and conventional telephone service. Bring the original identification required for registration and ask about the complete initial cost, data package and recurring deductions. For internet apps alone, compare NoveSIM’s Macau and Asia options. Do not assume a tourist data eSIM is the digital version of a local calling line.

Top Macau (Special Administrative Region of China) eSIMs

Choose Macau SIM cards by the communication task

Your requirement What to investigate What needs checking
A Macau number for ordinary calls or SMS A local prepaid telephone line Assigned number, registration, calling rates and any recurring service
Maps, bookings and internet messages A local data offer or NoveSIM travel eSIM Allowance, validity, device support and total cost
Verification texts to your existing number Continued access to that original line Home-provider roaming and incoming SMS conditions
An eSIM instead of a physical card The exact digital product on sale Whether it supplies data only or also telephone service

A new local number will not automatically receive codes addressed to your bank’s registered number. Similarly, continuing to use an existing messaging account over mobile data does not mean the data plan has supplied a telephone line. Resolve those two needs separately before paying.

CTM Chill Card: separate the balance from the data package

CTM’s published Chill Card information, checked on 26 October 2026, lists MOP100 and MOP200 face values. These amounts should not be read as a stated quantity of included gigabytes.

The card automatically activates the MOP10 “CTM Buddy” service for 30 days, renewing from the balance. Its unlimited local voice benefit applies between CTM mobile customers; it is not an unlimited allowance to every local or overseas number. The card page lists basic voice at MOP0.40 per minute, local outgoing SMS at MOP0.25 each and incoming SMS as free. Confirm how the chosen benefits and basic rates apply to your calls.

The published card lifetime is 180 days. Reloading before expiry extends it by 180 days and retains the number and balance. That is separate from a data package’s duration. Ask for the data allowance, expiry, out-of-bundle treatment and any renewal charge before leaving the counter.

Registration for a visiting customer

The Macao telecom authority’s real-name registration notice explains that operators must verify and record customer identity information when providing the relevant telecommunications services. Ask the operator which registration procedure applies to the card being sold; purchasing packaging alone does not establish that service is active.

CTM requires an original identity card or valid passport when buying its prepaid card. Its published rules allow holders of other travel documents to register up to three prepaid cards. We have not established a guaranteed approval time or a complete online visitor-registration route. Carry the original document rather than relying on a photograph being accepted.

At the shop, explain whether you need a new calling line or just internet access. Have the seller identify the assigned number if telephone service is the reason for the purchase. Ask which calls and messages are included and which reduce the stored balance.

Why older 3 Macau and SoSIM offers need caution

The official notice dated 15 September 2026 says Hutchison Telephone (Macau) will cease mobile communication services after 30 November 2026. It directs existing customers to Hutchison or CTM shops to complete the relevant arrangements, with CTM continuing service for the remaining contract period.

This does not confirm that a new visitor can buy an old SoSIM offer today, keep its former terms or obtain an automatic transfer without action. Older product PDFs can describe how a service worked without establishing current sales availability. For a new purchase, obtain the present offer and its expiry conditions directly.

The operator transition also should not be used to predict changes to NoveSIM’s network access. A domestic retail offer and a travel provider’s partner arrangement are separate matters. Check the purchased package’s current network information rather than converting an acquisition announcement into a coverage promise.

A local eSIM is not necessarily a local calling line

CTM’s website separately advertises an inbound “3-destination Data eSIM”. We could not verify enough detail from that product page to establish its current allowances, registration process or telephone-number functions. We also have not confirmed that a foreign visitor can obtain the Chill prepaid service in eSIM format with the same conditions as the card described above.

If the seller offers an eSIM, ask for the precise product name and an explicit statement about ordinary calls and SMS. A QR code describes the installation method, not the benefits. Do not pay for a data product expecting it to meet a requirement for a local calling number.

When NoveSIM is enough for the visit

If you only need internet apps, compare the current NoveSIM Macau data plans with our Asia eSIM’s listed destinations and packages. The Macau page currently recommends checking Asia because it includes Macau and was cheaper in the matching allowance-and-validity comparisons shown there. Use the live prices for your purchase.

Do not assume either a Macau-only plan or a regional name includes every onward stop. Check Macau, Hong Kong and mainland China individually in the selected offer. A lower price has value only when the destination list and dates fit your journey.

Confirm that your exact phone model and regional version support eSIM and that the handset is carrier-unlocked. Read the supplied start rule before installing over stable internet. Choose the travel profile for mobile data and apply its roaming instructions, while preventing automatic fallback to home-line data if you do not intend to use it.

Hotspot permission, available networks and performance depend on the selected package, device and coverage. If a connection fails, retain the installed profile and contact support before deleting or reinstalling it. For home-SIM billing questions, use our Macau roaming-charges guide rather than treating a travel data purchase as protection from all charges on another line.

Before leaving the shop or relying on a new profile

  1. Confirm whether the purchase supplies data only or a usable telephone number with calling service.
  2. Record the full payment, usable allowance, expiry and any automatically renewing charge.
  3. Complete the operator’s required registration and activation process.
  4. Select the intended mobile-data line and turn Wi-Fi off briefly to test a fresh webpage.
  5. If you bought the line for calls or SMS, test that function separately.
  6. Keep the receipt and ask how to check the balance, recharge and obtain help.

For a brief visit, an unexpectedly closed shop or an uncompleted registration can consume a substantial part of the day. Save the first address and an agreed contact method offline, whichever connection you plan to buy.

FAQ

Does a NoveSIM Macau eSIM come with a phone number?

No. It supplies mobile data rather than a Macau telephone number, ordinary calling minutes or carrier SMS. Choose a separate telephone service if those functions are essential.

Is prepaid card value the same as an included data allowance?

No. Ask how much usable data the purchase supplies and whether another package must be activated. Also check which recurring services deduct money from the balance.

Can I rely on an old SoSIM price comparison?

Obtain current sales and transition information before buying. A historic price does not establish that the product is still available or that its previous conditions will continue.

Will a new Macau line receive texts sent to my usual number?

No. A message addressed to your original number still requires access to that line. Check the original provider’s service and charging conditions before switching it off.

Final Recommendation

Compare Macau SIM cards around the functions you actually need. A local calling line can be useful when ordinary calls or SMS matter; a data-only NoveSIM package can be sufficient for internet communication.

For local prepaid, confirm registration, the data component, stored balance and recurring deductions. Keep card validity separate from package expiry, and resolve any reliance on an older operator offer before purchase.

For travel data, compare Macau with Asia, verify every destination and follow the selected package’s instructions. The useful choice is the one that supplies the right service for the whole visit, without assuming that a SIM format guarantees a local number.
