When comparing Gibraltar SIM cards, start with a practical question: do you need internet access, or a local line for ordinary calls and SMS? Gibtelecom’s Tourist Data SIM, its standard Pay As You Go service and a NoveSIM travel eSIM serve different needs. A physical SIM is not automatically a calling service, and an eSIM is not automatically a renewable plan.
This guide compares those choices for visitors. It focuses on what you receive, how long you can use it and what happens when the allowance ends. For a short visit, the purchase arrangements and any need for another package can matter as much as the advertised data volume.
Our NoveSIM plans supply mobile data without a Gibraltar phone number, conventional voice calls or carrier SMS. Existing internet messaging accounts can use the connection. If you need verification texts sent to your usual number, retain access to that separate line and check its provider’s conditions.
Quick answer: Compare Gibtelecom Tourist Data and NoveSIM when you need mobile internet; investigate standard PAYG when a local calling line or repeat top-ups matter. The Tourist Data product has a fixed 14-day lifetime and cannot be renewed. Before choosing PAYG, confirm the initial line cost, visitor registration and a top-up method you can use with your payment card.

Compare the service behind each SIM
| Choice | What to compare | Deciding question |
|---|---|---|
| Gibtelecom Tourist Data SIM/eSIM | 15 GB for £10 or 30 GB for £20; a 14-day data product | Will one allowance cover the whole visit? |
| Gibtelecom standard PAYG | A local mobile line with separately purchased credit and bundles | Do you need ordinary calls, SMS or repeat purchases? |
| NoveSIM Gibraltar eSIM | Online travel-data packages on an eligible phone | Does the selected allowance and validity suit your stay? |

Tourist Data: straightforward, but with a firm end point
Gibtelecom offers its tourist product in physical SIM and eSIM formats. Its published sales points include the Customer Service Centre at John Mackintosh Square, Music Corner on Main Street and Sky Shop at Gibraltar Airport. The list does not guarantee opening hours, stock or both formats at every outlet. See the official Tourist Data offer and retailer list.
The Tourist Data conditions say that validity starts when a physical SIM is inserted, or when the eSIM QR code is scanned and activated. Service ends when the data is exhausted or 14 days pass. More data requires another Tourist SIM/eSIM; the existing one cannot be topped up, extended or renewed.
Ordinary calls and SMS are excluded, although Gibtelecom specifies emergency calls to 999 as an exception. Spain roaming is provided for short personal visits while based in Gibraltar, not permanent use there; other countries are excluded. This is not a general European travel package.
Standard PAYG: check the whole cost of a local line
Gibtelecom’s standard PAYG page lists 30-day data bundles of 2 GB for £10, 10 GB for £15, 20 GB for £20 and 30 GB for £25. These are bundle prices, not a confirmed all-in quote for a visitor’s newly opened line. Ask what you must pay initially and which services that payment enables.
The separate £15 seven-day data pass has speed reductions after 5 GB, 8 GB and 12 GB of use. Do not compare its “unlimited” label with a fixed allowance as if both supplied unrestricted full-speed data. Published local out-of-bundle rates include 25p per minute for calls, 20p per SMS and 17p per MB of data. Background traffic can therefore consume credit after a bundle finishes.
Bundle expiry and retention of a telephone number are different questions. If keeping the line for another visit matters, ask Gibtelecom to confirm the current inactivity rule as well as the next bundle’s expiry.
Can a visitor register and recharge a PAYG line?
The reviewed public pages do not establish a complete visitor-specific registration process or document list for a new standard PAYG line. They also do not settle the initial charge for that exact visitor purchase. Carrying identification is sensible, but we cannot promise either document-free registration or that a passport alone completes every requirement.
There is a concrete payment restriction to check. Gibtelecom’s mobile support page says bank cards used for online PAYG balance top-ups must be registered to local addresses. A foreign-issued card should not be assumed to work. The same page describes £10 and £25 scratchcards at its service centre and retailers, and online top-ups from £5 to £25 in £5 increments. Confirm a usable method before relying on later recharges.
- Ask whether the retailer is selling Tourist Data or standard PAYG.
- For PAYG, confirm eligibility, documents and the full initial payment.
- Ask how calls, SMS and data are charged after any bundle expires.
- Confirm how you will buy more credit using a payment method available to you.
- Keep the receipt and have the intended service working before leaving the shop.
When NoveSIM fits the visit
You can compare our Gibraltar eSIM packages before travelling rather than arranging a local line. Choose by total data, validity and the selected package’s start rule. Check high-speed limits on Unlimited options and confirm hotspot permission if you intend to connect a laptop. The listed network technology is not a guarantee of speed or reception at every stop.
Before paying, check your exact model and regional version against our eSIM-compatible devices information, and confirm the phone is unlocked. A handset that accepts a physical SIM may still lack eSIM support.
Install over reliable internet according to your order instructions. Select the intended profile for mobile data, apply its supplied roaming settings and disable automatic data switching if you want to avoid home-line data use. For NoveSIM, the APN is data.esim; do not copy a domestic operator’s APN onto our profile. Keep an installed eSIM in place during troubleshooting unless support tells you to remove it.
A Spain itinerary needs a separate coverage check
Do not transfer one provider’s Spain inclusion to another product. Check both destinations by name in the exact package you select. For existing home-SIM allowances, fees and unexpected network changes, use our Gibraltar roaming guide. That decision should come before purchasing another allowance: already-included data may be enough.

FAQ
Does buying a local physical SIM guarantee calls and SMS?
No. Check the product, not the card format. Ask specifically for a calling service if a local telephone line is essential; a data product will not replace it.
What should I compare for a stay longer than two weeks?
Compare a service covering the whole stay with the cost and effort of another purchase. Check expiry, any renewal option and how you will pay, rather than choosing solely by the first package’s price.
Can I assume my overseas card will recharge a local line online?
No. Confirm the payment rules for the recharge method you intend to use before committing to that line. Buying an initial package and replenishing its balance can have different arrangements.
Will changing to a Gibraltar number move my bank verification texts?
No. Codes normally go to the number registered with the bank. A newly purchased line does not automatically replace that number, and a data-only travel eSIM does not receive carrier SMS for it.
Final Recommendation
Choose Gibraltar SIM cards by the service you need. Compare Tourist Data and NoveSIM for internet access; investigate standard PAYG when a local calling line or repeat recharges justify the extra arrangements.
Resolve the practical details before purchase: device support, start date, expiry and a usable payment method. For a local line, obtain the visitor registration requirements directly rather than treating an online bundle table as a complete joining process.
If Spain is part of the journey, verify its inclusion separately. A suitable plan should cover the actual visit and the communications you need, without paying twice for data already available through your home tariff.
