Traveller troubleshooting a phone outside a Ugandan lodge.

Uganda eSIM Not Working? Safe Troubleshooting Steps

If a NoveSIM Uganda eSIM is not working, keep the installed profile and identify the visible symptom before changing settings. A missing profile, No Service and a registered line without internet require different checks.

Most connection problems can be narrowed down safely by confirming that the eSIM is enabled, selected for mobile data, allowed to use Data Roaming and registered on an authorised network. Test one change at a time so the result remains meaningful.

NoveSIM Uganda plans are data-only. The travel line provides mobile internet but does not include a local Ugandan number, traditional voice calls or SMS. Messaging and calling apps work through data once the connection is restored.

Quick answer: Check that the NoveSIM profile is present and switched on, assign it to mobile data, enable Data Roaming for that line, turn off Wi-Fi and test a normal webpage. If there is no signal, let Automatic network selection register first. If there is signal but no data, confirm the APN is data.esim when manual entry is required. Do not delete the eSIM unless NoveSIM Support explicitly instructs you to do so.

Which symptom is visible on the phone?

Start with what the phone actually shows. Changing the APN cannot restore a profile that is missing, and selecting another operator will not correct an inactive data line.

Visible symptom First area to check
NoveSIM is absent from SIM settings Installation status and the device used for installation
Profile is present but switched off Enable or Use SIM control
No Service, SOS or Searching Roaming, automatic registration, location and permitted network
Signal appears but webpages do not load Mobile-data assignment, roaming, allowance and APN
Data works but is slow Signal quality, congestion, location, allowance and network mode
Hotspot connects but has no internet Phone data first, then hotspot support and client connection

Take a screenshot of the status and note the current location before starting. If Support becomes necessary, this evidence is more useful than a list of many settings changed at once.

Run the shortest safe connection check

This sequence tests the mobile-data path without removing the installed profile or resetting unrelated phone settings.

  1. Open the phone’s SIM or mobile-network settings.
  2. Confirm that the NoveSIM profile is visible.
  3. Switch on the NoveSIM line or Use SIM.
  4. Select NoveSIM as the mobile-data SIM.
  5. Enable Data Roaming for NoveSIM.
  6. Confirm that aeroplane mode is off.
  7. Leave network selection on Automatic.
  8. Turn off Wi-Fi.
  9. Wait several minutes, then open a lightweight webpage.

If the line has not yet been activated after arrival, use the Uganda eSIM activation guide. Travellers who are unsure whether the profile was installed should compare the phone with the Uganda eSIM installation steps.

What if the NoveSIM profile is missing?

Search the SIM list carefully before assuming the installation failed. A profile may appear under a generic label such as Travel, Secondary, Business or the provider name used during installation.

  • On iPhone, check Settings → Cellular, Mobile Data or Mobile Service.
  • On Samsung, check Settings → Connections → SIM Manager.
  • On Pixel, check Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
  • On other Android phones, search Settings for SIM, eSIM or mobile network.

If the profile is not listed, confirm whether installation completed on this exact phone and whether the QR code was already used. Do not repeatedly scan the same code or try it on another device without checking the current order instructions. Installation codes may not be reusable.

Also confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. The model-specific checks are explained in Does My Phone Support an eSIM for Uganda?.

What if the profile is installed but disabled?

Enable the travel line without removing or reinstalling it. Menu wording varies by manufacturer, software version and carrier build.

  1. Open the settings for the NoveSIM profile.
  2. Turn on Turn On This Line, Use SIM or the equivalent control.
  3. Select NoveSIM for mobile data.
  4. Enable Data Roaming for NoveSIM.
  5. Leave the primary SIM assigned to calls or SMS if required.
  6. Turn off Wi-Fi and test mobile data.

On a Dual SIM phone, make sure the change applies to NoveSIM rather than the home line. Enabling roaming on the wrong line can expose the primary carrier account to roaming charges. The dedicated iPhone guide and Android guide show the platform-specific controls.

What if the phone shows No Service, SOS or Searching?

These indicators mean the travel line has not completed mobile-network registration. First confirm the line is enabled and Data Roaming is on. Apple’s current travel guidance also recommends using aeroplane mode briefly and then allowing the iPhone to select a network automatically again.

  1. Move outdoors or near a window if the phone is inside a large building.
  2. Turn on aeroplane mode for about 30 seconds.
  3. Turn aeroplane mode off.
  4. Keep network selection on Automatic.
  5. Allow several minutes for registration.
  6. Check whether the status changes to an operator name or signal indicator.

Coverage varies by location, terrain, buildings, plan, permitted partner and device. A lack of service at a lodge or on a remote road may be local rather than a damaged eSIM. Use the Uganda eSIM coverage guide and rural Uganda coverage guide to interpret the location.

If Automatic does not register and the current plan instructions or Support identify an allowed partner, follow the controlled steps for manual network selection in Uganda. A visible operator is not necessarily authorised for the plan.

What if there is signal but no mobile internet?

A signal indicator shows network registration, not necessarily a complete data path. Focus next on the selected data line, roaming, allowance and APN.

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi and any active VPN.
  2. Confirm that Mobile Data is on.
  3. Confirm that NoveSIM is the selected data SIM.
  4. Confirm Data Roaming is enabled for NoveSIM.
  5. Open a normal webpage rather than testing only one app.
  6. Check the current plan’s validity and remaining allowance.
  7. Inspect the APN only if data still fails.

Some apps may retain a failed session or depend on a separate service. A browser test helps distinguish a general mobile-data failure from a problem limited to one app.

Which APN should a NoveSIM Uganda eSIM use?

When manual APN entry is required, use data.esim. Do not enter the APN of a domestic Ugandan operator or copy a value from another travel provider.

Field Value
APN data.esim
Username Leave blank unless current instructions say otherwise
Password Leave blank unless current instructions say otherwise
Other fields Do not change without current NoveSIM instructions

Save the setting, reselect the NoveSIM line if necessary and test again with Wi-Fi off. The full iPhone and Android paths are in the Uganda eSIM APN guide.

What if the connection works but is slow?

A working but slow connection is different from a profile or registration failure. Check the signal, move away from heavy building obstruction, pause large downloads and test again later if the area is congested.

Do not force 5G or assume its icon guarantees higher speed. Available technology and performance depend on the plan, permitted partner, device, region, local coverage and current network load. The Uganda 4G and 5G guide explains those limits.

Use the separate slow mobile data troubleshooting guide when ordinary pages load but performance remains poor. It avoids mixing speed optimisation with more fundamental eSIM registration checks.

Why might data stop after travelling to another area?

The phone may need time to register again after leaving an airport, city, border area or remote stop. Automatic network selection normally gives it the best opportunity to attach to an available authorised partner.

Toggle aeroplane mode once, wait for registration and retest. If the phone was left on a manually selected operator, restore Automatic. Compare the current location with the Uganda mobile-networks guide rather than assuming that a result in Kampala applies everywhere.

What if mobile data fails during a call?

Dual SIM behaviour varies by phone and configuration. On some devices, data can pause or move to the line handling an active call. After the call ends, confirm that NoveSIM is still selected for mobile data.

NoveSIM remains data-only; calls and SMS on the primary line are billed and handled by that carrier. Turn off data roaming for the home line if it is not needed, while keeping Data Roaming enabled for NoveSIM.

What if the hotspot has no internet?

First confirm that mobile data works on the phone itself with Wi-Fi off. A hotspot cannot share an internet connection that the phone does not have.

  1. Load a webpage on the phone over NoveSIM mobile data.
  2. Confirm that the plan and device allow hotspot use.
  3. Turn the hotspot off and on once.
  4. Reconnect the laptop or other client device.
  5. Check that the client did not retain another network or VPN route.

Hotspot availability depends on the plan, device and network conditions. See the Uganda eSIM hotspot guide for the complete test sequence.

Which actions should be avoided?

  • Do not delete the installed eSIM as a first troubleshooting step.
  • Do not factory-reset the phone for an ordinary travel-data issue.
  • Do not enter a local operator’s APN into NoveSIM.
  • Do not force random networks that are not permitted by the plan.
  • Do not change the primary SIM’s roaming settings by mistake.
  • Do not run every reset at once; the result will not identify the cause.

A mobile-network settings reset can also remove saved network preferences and, depending on the device, other connectivity settings. Use broader resets only when the manufacturer or NoveSIM Support recommends them for the recorded symptom.

What should you send to NoveSIM Support?

Provide a concise diagnostic record instead of deleting the profile. Include:

  • The order reference without posting it publicly.
  • The exact phone model and operating-system version.
  • The current city, road, lodge or approximate area.
  • A screenshot showing the eSIM line and network status.
  • Whether NoveSIM is selected for data and Data Roaming is enabled.
  • Whether Automatic registration or an instructed manual partner was tested.
  • Whether the APN shows data.esim.
  • The exact error message and the last step that changed the result.

Send this information through the NoveSIM contact page. Keep the profile installed so Support can advise the next safe action.

FAQ

Why is my Uganda eSIM not working?

The common causes are a disabled profile, the wrong mobile-data line, Data Roaming being off, failed network registration, exhausted or inactive plan data, or an incorrect APN.

Should Data Roaming be on for NoveSIM in Uganda?

Yes. Enable Data Roaming for the NoveSIM travel line. Keep it off for the primary SIM if home-carrier roaming data is not required.

Why do I have signal but no internet?

The line may be registered while the wrong SIM owns mobile data, roaming is disabled, the allowance is inactive or exhausted, or the APN is incorrect.

What APN should I use?

When manual APN entry is required for NoveSIM, use data.esim. Leave unrelated fields unchanged unless current instructions specify otherwise.

Should I select a network manually?

Use Automatic first. Select a network manually only when the current plan instructions or NoveSIM Support identify an allowed partner to test.

Will restarting the phone delete the eSIM?

No. A normal restart does not remove the installed profile. Deleting the eSIM is a separate action and should be avoided during troubleshooting.

Should I reinstall the eSIM?

Not without instruction. Installation codes may not be reusable, and removing the profile can make diagnosis harder. Contact NoveSIM Support first.

What if the eSIM works in Kampala but not on a remote route?

The difference may be local coverage, terrain or available partner access rather than an eSIM fault. Restore Automatic selection, move to a more open location and check the route coverage context.

Final Recommendation

When a Uganda eSIM is not working, preserve the profile and identify whether the failure concerns installation, line assignment, registration, data traffic or speed.

Work through the NoveSIM line, Data Roaming, Automatic registration and data.esim APN checks in that order. Test with Wi-Fi off after each relevant change.

If the connection still fails, send NoveSIM Support the exact phone, location, network status and completed checks. Do not delete the installed eSIM unless Support explicitly instructs you to do so.
