If a Hungary eSIM is not working, first identify whether the phone shows no network at all or has signal but cannot load data. No service usually points to activation, coverage, network selection or device compatibility. Signal without data more often involves the selected data line, roaming, APN, plan validity or allowance.
Test with WiFi turned off. A working hotel connection can hide the fact that cellular data has never connected, while weak indoor reception can make a correctly configured eSIM appear faulty.
NoveSIM travel eSIMs are data-only. We do not provide a Hungarian number, conventional calls or SMS. The absence of a local number is expected and does not mean the eSIM has failed.
Quick answer: Confirm that the plan is active, the Hungary eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data, data roaming is on for that eSIM, and the NoveSIM APN is data.esim if a manual APN is required. Keep network selection automatic, toggle aeroplane mode and test outdoors. Do not delete the eSIM unless NoveSIM support explicitly instructs you to do so.
Top Hungary eSIMs
Start by identifying the exact symptom
| What you see | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| No Service or SOS only | Coverage, activation and automatic network selection |
| Signal bars but no internet | Selected data line, roaming, APN and allowance |
| Internet works but is very slow | Signal quality, congestion, fair use, VPN and network mode |
| eSIM profile is missing | Installation status and device compatibility |
| Home SIM is using data | Cellular-data selection and automatic switching |
Do not change several settings at once. Make one change, wait for the phone to register and test again. This preserves evidence about the real cause.
Use a different test for no service, no data and slow data
No service means the phone has not registered on a network. Focus on plan activation, local coverage, supported partners and network selection. APN changes do not normally create radio signal where none exists.
Signal but no data means registration has occurred but the data path is failing. Check the selected data line, roaming, allowance and APN before changing the network.
Slow data should be tested in another location and at another time. Congestion, weak indoor signal, fair-use throttling, VPN overhead or unstable 5G may be responsible. Use the dedicated Hungary slow-eSIM guide when pages load but performance is poor.
Check that the plan has started
Open the purchase confirmation or provider account over WiFi. Confirm the plan status, validity dates, destination and remaining data. Installation and activation are not always the same event: some products begin when installed, while others start after first connection to a supported network.
- Hungary must appear in the plan’s coverage list.
- The validity period must include the current date.
- The allowance must not be exhausted.
- The phone must be in Hungary or another included destination.
- The eSIM must be installed on the intended device.
If you installed the profile before travel, do not reinstall it merely because it remains inactive outside the covered destination.
Select the Hungary eSIM for mobile data
On iPhone, open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service. On Android, the path may be Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs or Connections → SIM Manager. Confirm that the travel eSIM is turned on and selected for cellular data.
Disable automatic cellular-data switching during the test. Otherwise, the phone may silently move data back to the home SIM when the travel line is weak, creating roaming charges or confusing the diagnosis.
Enable data roaming on the travel line
A travel eSIM often connects through a partner network, so data roaming may need to be enabled on that eSIM even though you purchased a Hungary plan. Turn roaming on only for the travel line and keep it off on the home SIM unless the home tariff is intentionally being used.
After changing the setting, wait briefly and test an ordinary webpage with WiFi off. A messaging app alone is not a reliable test because it may display cached content.
Turn on data roaming on iPhone
- Open Settings and select Cellular or Mobile Service.
- Tap the Hungary eSIM line.
- Open Cellular Data Options when that menu appears.
- Turn on Data Roaming for the Hungary line.
- Return to the main cellular screen and confirm the same line is selected for cellular data.
Do not enable roaming on the home line by mistake. The two lines have separate controls even when they appear on the same settings screen.
Turn on data roaming on Android
- Open Settings.
- Choose Network & internet → SIMs, or Connections → Mobile networks on Samsung.
- Select the Hungary eSIM rather than the home SIM.
- Enable Roaming or Data roaming.
- Return to SIM preferences and assign mobile data to the Hungary eSIM.
Android wording varies by manufacturer and software version. If the phone presents one global roaming switch, verify which SIM is selected for data before turning it on.
Verify the APN
Many phones receive the APN automatically. If NoveSIM instructions require a manual value, use:
| APN | data.esim |
| Username | Leave blank |
| Password | Leave blank |
Remove accidental spaces and do not substitute a Telekom, Yettel or One Hungary APN. Those domestic settings are not automatically correct for a NoveSIM profile. Detailed device paths appear in the Hungary eSIM APN guide.
Refresh the network connection safely
- Turn WiFi off.
- Enable aeroplane mode for about 20 seconds.
- Disable aeroplane mode and wait for registration.
- Test a normal webpage.
- If there is still no connection, restart the phone once.
A restart does not remove the eSIM. Deleting the profile is different and can make recovery harder, so do not delete it during routine troubleshooting.
Leave network selection automatic first
Automatic selection allows the eSIM to register on a supported Hungarian partner network. If you previously selected a network manually, return to automatic and wait several minutes.
Only try manual selection when NoveSIM support or the plan instructions name an allowed network. Registering on the wrong operator may fail even when that network has a strong signal.
When manual network selection is justified
Manual selection is a controlled troubleshooting step when automatic registration repeatedly fails, attaches to an unusable partner or switches between networks. It is not the default configuration and should not be used to guess among every visible Hungarian operator.
Confirm the supported partner name first. A network appearing in the scan only means the phone can detect it; it does not prove the eSIM is authorised to register on it.
Select a supported network on iPhone
- Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service.
- Select the Hungary eSIM.
- Tap Network Selection.
- Turn off Automatic and wait for the scan to finish.
- Choose only a partner named in the plan instructions.
- Wait up to several minutes and test mobile data with WiFi off.
Select a supported network on Android
- Open the Hungary eSIM under SIMs, Mobile networks or SIM manager.
- Choose Network operators or Network selection.
- Turn off automatic selection and allow the full scan to complete.
- Select a supported partner from the plan details.
- Wait for registration and test an ordinary webpage.
If a supported network rejects registration, record the displayed name and return to automatic rather than cycling continuously through unrelated operators.
Return to Automatic after the test
Restore automatic network selection when manual choice does not solve the problem, after support testing is complete or before crossing into another country. A phone left locked to a Hungarian operator may fail to register after the border even when the regional plan covers the next destination.
After restoring automatic, toggle aeroplane mode briefly and wait for fresh registration. This is safer than leaving a temporary diagnostic setting in place for the rest of the trip.
Rule out a local coverage problem
Move near a window or outdoors and test again. Underground stations, thick historic buildings, rural terrain and large events can weaken service. Compare the result in another location before changing account settings.
The Hungary eSIM coverage guide explains route planning and partner-network limits. Signal conditions in central Budapest do not predict every Lake Balaton or countryside location.
Check VPN, Private Relay and DNS apps
Temporarily disable a VPN, filtering profile, custom DNS service or iCloud Private Relay, then test again. If data works, reconnect the privacy tool or review its configuration rather than leaving security disabled permanently.
Work-managed phones may apply profiles that the traveller cannot change. Contact the organisation’s administrator before removing management settings.
If the eSIM profile does not appear
Search the phone’s SIM or cellular settings for the label used during installation. If no profile appears, check whether installation completed and whether the exact regional phone model supports eSIM.
Do not scan the same QR code repeatedly. Some activation codes can be used only once. Follow the Hungary eSIM installation guide and contact support with the order details if the profile is genuinely missing.
What information should you send to support?
- Order number without publishing the full activation code.
- Phone make, exact model and operating-system version.
- Current location in Hungary.
- Plan status and remaining data.
- Screenshot of the selected data line and roaming setting.
- Displayed network name and any error message.
- Steps already tested.
Use WiFi to contact support if cellular data is unavailable. Never post the QR code or activation credentials publicly.

FAQ
Why does my Hungary eSIM show signal but no data?
The wrong data line, disabled roaming, an incorrect APN, expired validity or exhausted allowance are common causes. Test with WiFi off and confirm each setting on the travel eSIM.
Should data roaming be on for a Hungary travel eSIM?
Often yes, because the eSIM uses a partner network. Enable roaming on the travel eSIM when its instructions require it, while keeping roaming off on the home SIM.
What APN does a NoveSIM Hungary eSIM use?
When manual entry is required, the NoveSIM APN is data.esim. Leave username and password blank unless support provides different instructions.
Should I delete and reinstall the eSIM?
No. Do not delete an installed eSIM unless NoveSIM support explicitly instructs you to do so. A single-use activation code may not install again.
Final Recommendation
Diagnose no service, signal without data and slow data as separate symptoms before changing settings. Confirm plan status, select the Hungary eSIM for data, enable the required roaming and verify the APN.
Refresh registration with aeroplane mode, automatic network selection and one restart, then test outdoors to separate configuration from coverage. Use a named supported network manually only as a controlled test.
If the problem remains, preserve the installed profile and send support precise screenshots and device details. Do not delete the eSIM or expose its activation code.
