Traveller selecting a mobile network for a Hungary eSIM in Budapest

How to Switch Networks on a Hungary eSIM

A Hungary travel eSIM normally selects a supported mobile network automatically. Manual network selection can help when the phone has prolonged No Service, repeatedly connects to an unusable signal or support asks you to test another available partner.

Do not switch networks simply because one speed test is disappointing. Coverage and congestion change by street, building and time, and an operator visible in the scan may not be available to your particular plan.

Hungary’s main mobile networks are Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One. A travel eSIM may support one or more partners according to the package and current agreements.

Quick answer: Keep Network Selection on Automatic first. If the connection remains unavailable and your plan permits manual selection, scan for networks, choose a supported partner and wait several minutes. Test with Wi-Fi off. Return to Automatic when traveling to another region or after troubleshooting.

Top Hungary eSIMs

Automatic vs Manual Network Selection

Mode Best use Main limitation
Automatic Normal travel and movement between regions May take time to refresh after arrival
Manual Controlled troubleshooting in one location Can remain locked to a weak or unsupported network

Automatic mode is usually safer because the phone can adapt as supported coverage changes. Manual mode is diagnostic: it lets you test whether a different permitted partner registers and carries data in the current place.

Before Switching Networks

  1. Confirm that the Hungary eSIM is enabled.
  2. Select it as the preferred mobile-data line.
  3. Enable data roaming for the travel eSIM.
  4. Disable automatic data switching.
  5. Turn off data roaming on the home SIM.
  6. Check that the plan is active with data remaining.
  7. Use airplane mode for 30 seconds.
  8. Wait several minutes on automatic selection.

If these settings are wrong, changing operators will not solve the problem. Use the Hungary eSIM activation guide and Hungary eSIM data roaming guide first.

How to Switch Networks on iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
  3. Select the Hungary, Travel or NoveSIM line.
  4. Tap Network Selection.
  5. Turn Automatic off.
  6. Wait for the network scan to finish.
  7. Select a supported network shown in your plan instructions.
  8. Wait up to several minutes for registration.
  9. Turn Wi-Fi off and test a webpage or map.

If the phone shows No Service after the attempt, return to the list and test another supported partner. Do not rapidly tap several names; registration needs time to complete.

When testing is finished, turn Automatic back on unless support has told you to keep a particular network selected. See Hungary eSIM for iPhone for the complete dual-SIM configuration.

How to Switch Networks on Android

The exact path differs by manufacturer, but the control is usually under the Hungary eSIM’s mobile-network settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Network & internet, Connections or Mobile network.
  3. Open SIMs or SIM manager.
  4. Select the Hungary eSIM.
  5. Open Network operators or Automatically select network.
  6. Disable automatic selection.
  7. Wait for the scan.
  8. Select a supported partner.
  9. Allow several minutes for registration and test with Wi-Fi off.

Google Pixel

Open Settings, Network & internet, SIMs, select the Hungary eSIM and disable Automatically select network. Choose from the scan results, then test data after registration.

Samsung Galaxy

Open Settings, Connections, Mobile networks, Network operators, then disable Select automatically. Tap the intended supported operator and wait.

Some Android interfaces place Network operators directly under Mobile network rather than inside SIM manager. Use the Settings search field if necessary. The Hungary eSIM Android guide covers the surrounding controls.

Which Hungarian Network Should You Choose?

Choose only a partner supported by the purchased eSIM plan. The fact that Telekom, Yettel or One appears in the network list does not guarantee that the profile has permission to register on it.

Do not assume one operator is universally best:

  • Magyar Telekom has extensive national infrastructure and broad coverage.
  • Yettel Hungary is a major operator with strong coverage in many urban and regional areas.
  • One Hungary is the current consumer brand replacing Vodafone Hungary; older phone lists may still display a legacy network name.

Available partner access can differ from a local consumer SIM. Consult your NoveSIM plan details, then read Telekom vs Yettel vs One Hungary and Best Network in Hungary for Tourists for context.

Why a Network Appears but Will Not Connect

A phone scan detects radio broadcasts from nearby operators. Registration is a separate process that checks whether the SIM or eSIM is authorized.

An operator can appear but reject the profile because:

  • It is not included in the eSIM’s partner list.
  • The plan has not activated or has expired.
  • The phone is temporarily barred after repeated attempts.
  • The signal is detectable but too weak for stable registration.
  • The device lacks a useful frequency band.
  • A temporary operator or roaming-platform issue exists.

Return to automatic mode, use airplane mode briefly and wait. If every supported operator rejects registration, collect screenshots and contact support.

Network Selection for No Service

When the phone shows No Service or SOS, first step outdoors or near a window. Confirm that the travel line is enabled and the device is carrier-unlocked. Automatic selection should receive several minutes to register.

Manual selection becomes useful only after these checks. If one supported operator registers, keep it temporarily and test data. If none register, the problem may involve activation, plan status, coverage or device compatibility rather than operator choice.

Use Hungary eSIM Not Working for the full diagnostic sequence.

Network Selection for Signal but No Internet

If signal and 4G/5G are already visible, changing networks may not be the best first action. Check:

  • Hungary eSIM selected for mobile data
  • Data roaming enabled on the travel line
  • APN set to data.esim when manual entry is required
  • Plan active with remaining data
  • VPN or private DNS temporarily disabled for testing

A correct radio connection with a broken data path is often an APN or line-selection issue. Follow No Internet on a Hungary eSIM and the Hungary APN guide.

Network Selection for Slow Data

Manual selection can provide a useful comparison when automatic mode repeatedly chooses a congested or weak partner, but only if the plan supports another network.

Before switching, test outdoors, pause background downloads, disconnect VPN and compare LTE with an unstable 5G connection. Record the approximate time and location. Then test another supported operator under similar conditions.

Do not run many speed tests because they consume data. Actual tasks such as maps, ticket apps and messaging give practical evidence. See Why Is My Hungary eSIM Slow? for the complete checklist.

Should You Choose 4G or 5G Separately?

Network operator and network mode are different settings. Selecting Telekom, Yettel or One does not guarantee 5G. The available technology depends on partner access, coverage, device bands and plan support.

If a weak 5G connection repeatedly drops, temporarily choose LTE or 4G under Voice & Data or Preferred Network Type. Strong LTE may be more reliable inside buildings and on moving trains.

Read 5G in Hungary for Tourists before treating the 5G icon as a requirement.

Traveling Beyond Budapest

A manual selection that works well in Budapest can become unsuitable near Lake Balaton, in rural areas or on a cross-country train. The phone remains locked to the chosen operator until you change it or restore Automatic.

Before leaving the city, return Network Selection to Automatic. This gives the eSIM a better chance of adapting to permitted coverage along the route. Brief interruptions are normal during tunnels and cell handovers.

Crossing a Border

Manual selection is particularly risky during a multi-country journey. A Hungarian operator cannot serve you indefinitely after entering Austria, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania or Slovenia.

Verify that the next country is included in your plan, restore Automatic selection and use airplane mode after crossing if registration is slow. A Hungary-only plan does not gain extra countries because roaming is enabled.

For a Hungary–Austria trip, use the existing Austria and Hungary eSIM guide rather than creating a duplicate reversed page.

Common Network-Switching Mistakes

  • Choosing an operator that is visible but unsupported.
  • Switching before automatic registration has time to finish.
  • Tapping multiple operators without waiting.
  • Forgetting to turn Wi-Fi off during the test.
  • Leaving manual selection enabled while traveling onward.
  • Confusing operator selection with 4G/5G mode.
  • Ignoring the preferred data line, roaming or APN.
  • Deleting the eSIM after a rejected registration.

Do Not Delete the eSIM

A failed manual selection does not mean the eSIM profile is corrupt. Activation codes may be intended for a single installation, so deletion can create a larger problem.

Return to Automatic, refresh with airplane mode and collect evidence. Remove the profile only when NoveSIM support explicitly instructs you and provides the recovery procedure.

What to Send Support

  • Order number and exact phone model
  • Current location in Hungary
  • Whether automatic selection registers
  • Names visible in the manual scan
  • Which supported networks were tested
  • Exact error or status after each attempt
  • Screenshot of data line and roaming settings
  • APN and plan validity information

Do not share the eSIM QR code publicly. Screenshots of the network list and status bar are usually sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I keep automatic network selection on in Hungary?

Yes for normal travel. Automatic mode adapts more easily as supported coverage changes.

Can I manually choose Telekom, Yettel or One?

Only when the selected operator is supported by your eSIM plan. Visibility in the scan does not guarantee permission to register.

Why does manual selection say forbidden or unavailable?

The plan may not support that operator, the signal may be too weak or a temporary registration problem may exist.

Will switching networks make the eSIM faster?

It can help when another supported partner has better signal or lower congestion in that location. It will not restore a depleted high-speed allowance.

Should I choose 5G in the network list?

The scan normally lists operators, not a guaranteed radio technology. Set 4G/5G separately under the Hungary eSIM’s preferred network mode.

Why did data stop after leaving Budapest?

A manually selected operator may have weaker coverage on the new route. Return to Automatic and refresh registration.

Do I need to change the APN after switching?

No. Keep the travel eSIM’s correct APN. Do not enter a consumer APN belonging to the local partner.

Final Network Selection Checklist

  • Automatic selection tested first
  • Hungary eSIM enabled and selected for data
  • Data roaming enabled on the travel line
  • Plan active with data remaining
  • Only supported partners tested manually
  • Several minutes allowed for each attempt
  • Wi-Fi off during the data test
  • Automatic mode restored before onward travel

Manual network selection is a useful diagnostic tool, not a permanent optimization for every trip. Start with Automatic, test only supported partners and restore Automatic whenever your location or country changes.
