For SIM cards in Malawi, arrange registration with the operator or an authorised seller before relying on the new line. A local calling package can be useful if you need a Malawian number, but the starter SIM and the data allowance are not necessarily one purchase.
TNM publishes a route from buying a starter pack to registering and activating it. Airtel has shops in Malawi, although the public information checked does not establish a complete tourist purchase checklist or reliable airport counter schedule for either operator.
At NoveSIM, we provide mobile data, not a Malawi telephone number, standard voice calls or carrier SMS. Our travel eSIM is an alternative for an unlocked, compatible phone when you mainly need navigation, email and internet messaging.
Quick answer: Contact an Airtel or TNM shop that can register foreign visitors and ask for the current document requirements and total bundle cost. Take your original passport, but confirm whether other documents are needed. Do not base your arrival arrangements on an unverified SIM counter at Lilongwe or Chileka Airport. For data only, compare the local option with a NoveSIM Malawi plan for your travel dates.

SIM cards in Malawi: start with registration, not a price list
The MACRA registration FAQ lists passports among acceptable documents and directs customers to their phone company or its agents and distributors. However, parts of the FAQ discuss an older registration process, and official government reporting in 2025 describes consultations on new biometric registration rules.
This is not a complete, current instruction sheet for a non-resident buying prepaid service. Ask the operator which rules apply to you now, including whether it needs a passport copy, an address or any additional verification. We have not confirmed that a passport alone is sufficient or that a separate photograph is always required.
Have the line registered to you through the appropriate operator process. Buying a SIM already registered to a seller is not a substitute for completing your own registration. Keep the receipt and assigned number so you can identify the account if you need help later.
TNM: distinguish starter-pack activation from buying data
TNM’s official FAQ says to buy a starter pack from a TNM dealer or shop, register the SIM and then dial 100 to activate the number. It publishes a starter-pack price, but confirm the current charge with the seller rather than treating an undated FAQ as a guaranteed quotation.
The FAQ lists internet-bundle purchases through *202# or the TNM Smart App. It also gives separate instructions for recharging airtime. Ask staff to show you the usable data balance after the bundle is purchased; an airtime balance does not establish how much bundled internet you have.
If you need calls, check which networks and destinations the allowance covers. Confirm when the bundle expires, how additional data is bought and whether unused data carries over. None of those benefits should be assumed from the starter-pack price.
Use TNM’s official support contacts to find an appropriate purchase point. An enterprise office or head-office address is not automatically a walk-in tourist SIM counter.
Airtel: ask a shop about the service it can issue to visitors
Airtel Malawi has announced a shop in Area 12, Lilongwe, through its official company account. That gives you a named city location to enquire about, not confirmation of its opening hours or of every product it can sell to a visitor.
Before making the journey, ask for a new prepaid line and explain that you are visiting from abroad. Confirm the required documents, SIM format, activation procedure and available bundles. A shop that offers mobile-money services may still need to complete a separate mobile-line registration.
We have not verified a complete current Airtel tourist price list, local eSIM purchase procedure or foreign-visitor document checklist. Use the Malawi operator’s instructions for the service being sold; Airtel requirements from another country do not establish the rules here.
Lilongwe and Chileka Airport: keep a second purchase option
Airport SIM purchases are described in travel guides, but we have not confirmed current Airtel or TNM counter availability, location or opening hours at either Lilongwe or Chileka Airport from the checked official information.
Before departure, ask your chosen operator whether it has a sales point at your arrival airport, whether it can register a foreign visitor there and whether it will be open for your flight. A reference to an airport partnership is not proof that a staffed retail counter is operating.
If those details cannot be confirmed, arrange a city-shop visit or another data option rather than assuming you will buy immediately after landing. Download your transfer instructions, accommodation address and any tickets you need to show before leaving your existing connection.
What to ask about payment
We have not confirmed foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard acceptance for initial SIM purchases at Airtel or TNM shops or airport points. Ask the specific seller which methods it accepts, and consider having an appropriate amount of Malawi kwacha available as a fallback. This is not a claim that every outlet is cash-only.
Confirm the complete amount before paying: the SIM or activation charge, the chosen bundle and any other stated fee. If someone quotes a registration charge, ask what it covers and request a receipt. MACRA’s published FAQ describes registration as free, but the cost of a SIM and mobile service is a separate matter.
Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba are mobile-money services, not evidence that your foreign bank card will be accepted at a SIM counter. Their account requirements should not be confused with the registration process for the telephone line.
Check the phone and connection while staff can help
- Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked and accepts the SIM format being offered.
- Complete the registration and have staff confirm that the line is active.
- Select it for mobile data, turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a new webpage.
- Check the remaining bundle balance and expiry, not just the airtime balance.
- Test a call if a local calling service was the reason for the purchase.
- Save the receipt, assigned number and operator support details.
For a route beyond the place of purchase, ask about the actual destinations on your itinerary. A successful shop test does not confirm continuous reception along the lakeshore or at every rural accommodation. Keep essential directions available offline instead of relying on a nationwide “best network” promise.
Compare NoveSIM when a local number is unnecessary
If your bookings and contacts are handled through internet apps, compare our Malawi eSIM data plans with the complete local bundle price and validity. We provide data only; choosing our travel line does not add ordinary calling minutes.
Before buying, follow our phone compatibility guidance and check that the device is unlocked. Read the selected plan’s activation rules, then install with the instructions supplied with your order.
On arrival, use the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable roaming on that line as instructed. If you retain your original line, our guide to using a travel eSIM alongside your existing SIM explains the separate roles. Home-provider calls and SMS retain that provider’s charges.
Check any hotspot or fair-use conditions before relying on the plan for a laptop. Available networks and speeds depend on the chosen plan, device and local coverage.

FAQ
Can a tourist register a Malawi SIM with a passport?
MACRA’s published FAQ lists a passport among acceptable documents. It does not establish a complete current checklist for foreign visitors. Bring the original passport and confirm additional requirements with Airtel or TNM before purchase.
Can I buy a SIM at Lilongwe or Chileka Airport?
We have not confirmed current operator sales counters or their hours at either airport. Check with the operator for your arrival date and keep a city-shop or alternative data option if the details remain unresolved.
Does a TNM starter pack include my whole data allowance?
Do not assume so. TNM publishes starter-pack activation and internet-bundle purchase as separate procedures. Ask what is included in the current offer and confirm your usable data balance and expiry after buying.
Does NoveSIM include a Malawi phone number?
No. Our travel plans provide mobile data, not a Malawian telephone number, conventional voice calls or carrier SMS. Internet calling and messaging apps can use the connection. Investigate a local calling package if ordinary telephone service is essential.
Final Recommendation
For SIM cards in Malawi, prioritise a seller that can explain and complete your visitor registration. Confirm the bundle separately from the starter SIM and test the service before leaving.
Do not make an unverified airport counter your only arrival plan. Ask Airtel or TNM about the correct shop, current documents and accepted payment method before travelling there.
If you only need internet, compare NoveSIM’s Malawi data options for your dates and phone. Keep transport details offline until your chosen connection is working.
