SIM Cards in Madagascar: Yas, Orange, Airtel or Travel Data?

Local SIM cards in Madagascar are worth comparing if you need a Malagasy telephone number to call a driver, accommodation or local contact. Yas, Orange and Airtel offer mobile services, but their published information does not provide an equally clear tourist buying process.

The most specific visitor offer found is a Yas tourist eSIM sold through listed shops. Orange confirms SIM sales and eSIM activation at its Antaninarenina agency, while Airtel directs SIM buyers to a nearby sales point. Check the exact product before travelling to a shop: a prepaid bundle, a physical SIM and an eSIM are not necessarily sold on identical terms.

At NoveSIM, we provide travel eSIM plans for mobile data. We do not provide a Madagascar telephone number, conventional calls or SMS with these plans. They can supply the internet connection for maps, bookings and WhatsApp, including internet calls.

Quick answer: Choose a local line if ordinary calls or SMS are essential. Yas publishes a 60,000 Ar tourist eSIM with 5 GB and 30-day validity, and lists Ivato Airport among its purchase locations. Orange and Airtel also sell SIM services, but a complete prepaid registration checklist for foreign visitors was not confirmed. If you only need data, compare NoveSIM on an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone. Do not assume any airport counter is open around the clock.

Comparing SIM cards: local calls or mobile data?

Before choosing a SIM, ask how your local contacts expect to reach you. A guide who uses WhatsApp can message your existing account over mobile data. A business that only answers ordinary telephone calls may require a calling allowance or a separate way to place that call.

Requirement Purchase question
A local telephone number Does the SIM include a number, and which calls and SMS are included?
Maps and app communication How much usable data is included, and when does it expire?
A phone without eSIM support Can the shop supply and activate a compatible physical SIM?
Data organised before departure Does the travel eSIM suit the phone, trip dates and intended use?

For the data-only option, check the current allowances and validity on our Madagascar eSIM product page. A package with local calling benefits and a travel data plan solve different needs; compare their complete cost without treating them as interchangeable.

Yas has a published tourist eSIM offer

The official Yas eSIM page, checked on 13 October 2026, lists a prepaid tourist offer at 60,000 Ar. It includes 5 GB for 30 days, one hour of national calls, five minutes of international calls to specified destinations and 50 SMS across operators.

Confirm that this is the offer being sold, when its validity begins and which international destinations qualify. The published tourist offer concerns an eSIM: it does not establish an equivalent physical-SIM price or allowance.

Yas describes buying a voucher at a shop, registering with staff and scanning a QR code. Its listed eSIM locations include Ivato Airport, Zoom Ankorondrano, Nosy Be Mall, Diego Foch, Fort Dauphin, Morondava, Sainte Marie, Tamatave Avenue and Tuléar Ortu. The listing does not confirm today’s stock or the full opening schedule at each location.

The page does not give a complete document checklist for a foreign visitor. Contact the intended shop before travelling there, especially if you need a physical SIM rather than the advertised tourist eSIM.

Orange: a confirmed city shop, but incomplete visitor conditions

Orange’s Antaninarenina agency listing gives the address as Immeuble Mirador, Box No. 1, Antananarivo. It explicitly lists SIM sales and activation, eSIM activation, mobile packages and account recharging among its services.

The operator also publishes Be prepaid bundles. A bundle’s calling credit, data and validity are not the complete cost of obtaining a new line. Ask for the SIM or eSIM charge, registration requirements and the package total separately.

We have not confirmed a complete Orange prepaid document checklist for non-resident tourists. The available general subscription conditions are not sufficient evidence for applying bank-account, residence or monthly-contract requirements to a visitor buying prepaid service.

Current airport counter hours were also not confirmed. An online shop being accessible at any time does not mean a physical airport desk is open 24 hours.

Airtel: confirm the sales point and prepaid package together

Airtel’s SIM information page directs buyers to the nearest sales point. Its calls and SMS package page publishes prepaid options with different data allowances and validity periods. Those options should not be described as a verified, dedicated tourist SIM offer.

Before visiting a seller, confirm that it can register and activate a new line for a foreign visitor. We have not verified a current address and opening schedule for a particular Airtel tourist purchase location, or the total new-SIM charge.

Airtel’s general subscription document mentions identity and passport details, but also covers deposits and monthly credit arrangements. It does not settle the full process for a tourist buying a prepaid SIM. Requirements for Airtel Money are a separate issue and should not be assumed to apply identically to a basic mobile line.

Buying at Ivato Airport: have an offline fallback

Yas explicitly lists Ivato Airport as an eSIM location. That is useful evidence of a purchase point, not a guarantee that it will be staffed when your flight arrives or have the product you want.

Save the accommodation address, driver’s contact details and pickup instructions before departure. If the counter is closed or registration cannot be completed, use your pre-arranged transport rather than depending on an immediate SIM purchase. Confirm an alternative city shop when planning the first day.

If you buy at a counter, request the total in Ariary and the actual package expiry before paying. An allowance for calls, an airtime balance and mobile data are different items; ask staff to explain what has been activated.

Documents and activation: what to ask before paying

Take your original passport as practical preparation, but do not interpret that advice as confirmation that a passport alone is sufficient. The checked public information does not establish one complete visitor-registration checklist across all three operators.

  1. Ask whether the seller can register a non-resident visitor and which original documents, copies or address details it requires.
  2. Confirm the physical-SIM or eSIM format, the total charge and whether the purchase supplies ordinary calls and SMS.
  3. Have the seller identify the data allowance, activation date, expiry and method for buying more data.
  4. Complete registration and select the new line for mobile data.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and open a fresh webpage; test a call or SMS if those services were the reason for buying.
  6. Keep the receipt, assigned number and support details, and ask how to check the remaining allowance.

A successful test at the shop verifies that connection at that location. It does not establish uninterrupted reception throughout your journey. Ask accommodation hosts or your guide about the actual overnight stops rather than choosing an operator solely from a nationwide reputation.

When NoveSIM is the simpler data alternative

If you do not need a local calling line, arranging travel data online removes the shop purchase from your arrival checklist. First check whether your phone supports eSIM and confirm that it is carrier-unlocked. Compatibility can differ between regional versions of the same phone.

Our Madagascar product page currently lists Orange 4G and Airtel Madagascar SA 4G. Check the selected plan’s supported networks and conditions before buying; this is not a promise that every package lets you use both networks, or that Yas is included. Reception and speed depend on the plan, device and local coverage.

Read the installation and validity instructions supplied with the purchase before installing over a reliable internet connection. On arrival, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line as instructed. Leave home-line data roaming off unless you have deliberately arranged to use it, and prevent automatic data switching back to it.

You can check our guidance on keeping your original SIM alongside a travel eSIM if you need your existing number. Home-provider calls or SMS may still incur charges. Hotspot availability and any reduced-speed rules must be checked for the plan you choose.

FAQ

Can I buy a tourist SIM at Ivato Airport?

Yas lists Ivato Airport among its eSIM purchase locations. The checked page does not confirm exact opening hours or physical-SIM availability. Contact the operator before relying on a counter for your arrival.

What does the Yas Madagascar tourist eSIM include?

The published offer checked on 13 October 2026 costs 60,000 Ar and includes 5 GB for 30 days, one hour of national calls, five international minutes to specified destinations and 50 SMS across operators. Confirm the offer and validity start at purchase; these terms do not establish an equivalent physical-SIM package.

Is a passport enough to register a Madagascar prepaid SIM?

A passport is sensible to bring, but we have not confirmed that it alone satisfies the prepaid requirements for a foreign visitor at Yas, Orange or Airtel. Ask the chosen seller for the complete checklist. Subscription and mobile-money conditions should not automatically be applied to tourist prepaid purchases.

Does NoveSIM give me a Madagascar number?

No. We provide mobile data, not a local number, conventional calls or SMS with these travel plans. WhatsApp and other internet communication apps can use the data connection. Choose a suitable local calling line if ordinary telephone service is required.

Final Recommendation

Choose between SIM cards in Madagascar according to whether you need local calls or only internet access. For a Malagasy number, confirm the calling allowance and registration process with the chosen shop. Yas has the clearest published tourist eSIM offer in the sources checked; Orange and Airtel require further confirmation of the visitor purchase process.

For internet-only use, compare NoveSIM’s current Madagascar plans after checking the phone, validity and supported networks. Prepare the installation before departure without assuming that reception will be available at every stop.

Whichever route you choose, save the arrival details offline and test the service before depending on it. A confirmed package and working connection are more useful than an unverified promise about airport hours or nationwide coverage.
