Vodafone is a useful starting point when comparing mobile networks for Ireland: nPerf ranked it first for overall mobile internet performance in its 2025 Irish results. Three led download speeds in the same study. Neither result tells you which network will work best at your particular accommodation.
For a visitor, the choice has two parts: reception where you will stay and the service you can actually buy. A local prepaid SIM, your home provider’s roaming agreement and a travel eSIM can give access to different networks or features.
Our NoveSIM travel eSIMs are data-only. We do not provide an Irish phone number, conventional calls or SMS; you can use internet messaging and calling apps through your data connection. Check the current Ireland package rather than assuming that every Irish operator is available to it.
Quick answer: Compare Vodafone for overall performance and Three for download speed, then check Vodafone, Three and eir at the exact places on your itinerary using ComReg’s outdoor coverage map. For a travel eSIM, confirm the included partner network and 4G/5G access before buying. Choose reliable reception at your stops over a national speed ranking.

What the network comparisons actually tell you
The nPerf Ireland report for January–December 2025, published in January 2026, separates overall experience from individual speed measurements. Its overall score combines speed, latency, browsing and streaming tests. A download-speed winner therefore need not win the overall assessment.
| Network | Useful evidence | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Vodafone | First overall and first for overall 5G performance in nPerf’s 2025 results | Coverage at your overnight stops and whether the purchased service includes the features you need |
| Three | First for download speed, including 5G downloads, in that study | Local reception rather than assuming a faster national result applies to your route |
| eir | An alternative to compare at the same addresses | Its mapped coverage at the locations where the other options look weak |
These are historical test results, not promised speeds for your trip. They do not establish that a roaming or travel eSIM connection will reproduce the experience of a domestic subscriber. For a broader explanation of reception limits, see our Ireland eSIM coverage guide.
Check the hotel and the difficult part of the route
Start with the places where losing data would be inconvenient: the accommodation you need to find after dark, a rural overnight stop or a meeting venue. Comparing only central Dublin can miss the location that should decide your purchase.
- Find the address or Eircode of each important stop.
- Open the coverage map linked from ComReg’s mobile coverage guidance.
- Compare the available providers at the same address, checking 4G as well as 5G.
- Look at the intervening route, especially when the trip includes countryside or coastal roads.
- Ask the accommodation about mobile reception inside the building if you need to work or make internet calls there.
ComReg describes the map as predicted outdoor coverage. It is not an indoor reception guarantee. Mountains and foliage can affect outdoor service; walls, insulation and glazing can affect reception indoors. A promising map colour should be treated as evidence to investigate, not proof that a bedroom or basement will have usable data.
Is the best 5G network the best choice for your holiday?
Not necessarily. Maps, messages and booking confirmations do not require the highest possible download speed. A consistent connection at your accommodation may matter more than 5G near the airport.
5G access requires a compatible phone, local coverage and support from the specific plan. A domestic operator’s 5G map alone does not confirm that your travel eSIM can use 5G there. Keep 4G coverage in the comparison rather than discarding a suitable plan because its advertised peak speed is lower.
If you intend to upload video or use a laptop hotspot, check the data allowance and tethering terms alongside reception. A speed award cannot make an insufficient allowance last longer.
A travel eSIM does not give you free choice of every network
The network on the screen and the company that sold the plan are not necessarily the same. With a travel eSIM, the permitted Irish partner network or networks are determined by the package. Choosing Vodafone, Three or eir manually will not create access if that network is not included.
Before buying a NoveSIM Ireland eSIM, check its current network information, validity and supported features. If a particular operator is essential for your route and the listing does not identify it clearly, ask us to confirm before paying. This guide does not promise access to all three operators.
If you need an Irish number or traditional calls, compare local prepaid services in our Ireland tourist SIM-card guide. That is a separate decision from which radio network has the best reception: a local SIM can also be supplied as an eSIM, depending on the operator’s offer and your device.
Do not extend an Irish coverage result to Northern Ireland
For a trip that includes Belfast or another stop in Northern Ireland, check UK coverage and package inclusion separately. A plan labelled Ireland must not be assumed to cover the UK, and an Irish network ranking does not answer which UK partner you will use after crossing.
Check both countries in the package details before departure. If you use separate data lines, know which one to select on each side and save the next address offline before travelling.
When your chosen network shows signal but data is poor
First separate a reception problem from a plan or settings problem. Test a normal webpage outdoors where it is safe to do so. If data works there but not inside your room, repeatedly changing the APN is unlikely to resolve the building’s reception.
For NoveSIM, check that the travel line is selected for mobile data, follow its roaming instructions and verify the data.esim APN when an APN entry is required. Leave network selection automatic initially. Only try another permitted network when the order instructions or our support team advise it.
Do not delete the installed eSIM to chase a stronger signal. If the problem persists, use the Ireland eSIM troubleshooting steps and send us your location, device model and the network displayed on the phone.

FAQ
Which mobile network is best in Ireland for tourists?
Vodafone is a reasonable starting point based on nPerf’s overall 2025 results, while Three led download speed. Compare both with eir at your actual stops. The best choice is the network your plan can access that provides suitable reception where you need it.
Which Irish network has the best 5G?
nPerf’s 2025 study ranked Vodafone first for overall 5G performance and Three first for 5G download speed. Those are different measures. Your phone, plan and location still determine whether you can use 5G and how it performs.
Can I switch my travel eSIM between Vodafone, Three and eir?
Only if the purchased package permits those networks. Manual selection does not unlock an unsupported operator. Check the package’s partner information or ask support before relying on a particular network.
Will a coverage map tell me which network works inside my hotel?
Not reliably. ComReg’s map shows predicted outdoor coverage. Ask the hotel about indoor reception and keep an alternative connection available if internet access there is essential.
Final Recommendation
Use Vodafone’s overall results and Three’s download-speed results to begin the comparison, not to end it. Include eir when checking the addresses that matter to your Ireland trip.
Then choose a purchasable plan with the required network access, data allowance and calling features. For NoveSIM, confirm the current package details rather than assuming unrestricted access to Irish operators.
Keep accommodation details and the next route offline. Reliable reception at the places you will actually visit is a more useful goal than having the highest speed-test result elsewhere.
