SIM cards in Guinea can serve two different needs: a Guinean number for ordinary calls and SMS, or mobile data for maps, messages and internet apps. Decide which you need before choosing a local operator or a travel eSIM.
This guide concerns Guinea–Conakry, not Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea or Papua New Guinea. That distinction matters when checking a prepaid offer or the country list of a regional package.
With NoveSIM, we provide mobile data, not a Guinean phone number, standard voice calls or carrier SMS. Our Guinea eSIM plans are an alternative if your priority is internet access on a compatible, unlocked phone rather than a local calling service.
Quick answer: For a local number, ask Orange Guinée or Areeba Guinée to confirm visitor registration and a shop that can complete it. Areeba is the former MTN Guinea business; older MTN instructions may no longer apply. We have not confirmed airport SIM counter hours, a complete current tourist document checklist or foreign-card acceptance. For data only, compare a Guinea travel eSIM with your home operator’s roaming allowance before departure.
Top Guinea eSIMs
Start with the calls you actually need to make
A driver or accommodation contact using WhatsApp does not necessarily require you to have a local number. A contact who expects an ordinary telephone call may. Ask how you will communicate before buying a local SIM just for a short visit.
A data-only eSIM does not replace carrier SMS verification on your existing number. If you need bank messages, consider keeping your home SIM installed while using another line for data. Our guide to using an eSIM alongside your existing SIM explains the distinction. Your home operator’s charges still apply to calls, messages and any roaming used on that line.
Before choosing NoveSIM, check eSIM support on your exact phone and confirm that it is unlocked. Review the chosen plan’s country coverage, allowance, validity and activation instructions. Do not assume that a package covering another country with “Guinea” in its name includes Guinea–Conakry.
Why an old MTN guide can send you in the wrong direction
MTN announced that it completed the sale of its Guinea operations to the State of Guinea on 30 December 2024. The current Areeba Guinée website lists mobile offers, internet passes and customer assistance. Use current Areeba information rather than treating an older MTN price, shop listing or recharge instruction as still valid. See the MTN sale announcement for the ownership change.
Orange Guinée is another local operator to contact about a visitor SIM. Its identification portal is not, by itself, confirmation that a new foreign visitor can buy and register a SIM entirely online.
Cellcom also appears in Guinea’s operator landscape. However, a July 2026 ministry update discusses restoring its activities and improving services. Before considering it, obtain confirmation of the actual prepaid offer and where it can be activated; the announcement is not evidence of reliable service on your itinerary. The ministry’s Cellcom update explains that context.
These findings do not establish a nationwide coverage winner. For travel beyond Conakry, ask about the places where you will stay and the roads between them, rather than relying on a general “best network” label.
Registering SIM cards in Guinea as a visitor
We have not verified a complete, current official checklist covering tourist SIM registration across these operators. Bring your passport, but do not treat that preparation as a promise that a passport alone is sufficient.
Contact the operator or an authorised agency with these questions:
- Can a short-term foreign visitor register this prepaid SIM in their own name?
- Which original documents are required, and are copies also needed?
- Is an entry stamp, visa, local address or other information required?
- Can this specific branch complete registration and activation during one visit?
- What are the separate costs of the SIM, initial credit and the data or calling bundle?
Ask for confirmation of the branch, not just confirmation that the operator sells prepaid service. An outlet selling recharge credit may not be able to register a new subscriber. Before leaving, make sure the number and purchased bundle work and retain the receipt and account details needed for support.
Finding assistance in Conakry without assuming shop hours
The Areeba assistance page provides agency guidance and contact channels. It lists service client 8800, a WhatsApp contact at 660 22 22 22, and a contact address in Coleah, route du Niger, Matam. A listed contact address is not confirmation of a retail counter’s opening hours or its ability to register a tourist SIM.
Ask for the nearest suitable agency and its hours for the day you intend to visit. For Orange, likewise obtain a current branch recommendation directly from the operator. We have not confirmed a visitor-ready shop schedule that would justify sending you to a particular counter at a particular time.
Do not make airport purchase your only arrival plan
We have not confirmed current SIM counter locations, stock or operating hours at Conakry’s Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport. A flight arrival time does not establish that registration assistance will be available.
If you arrive without an active data option, prepare the information needed to reach your accommodation without an online search:
- Save the address, booking confirmation and transfer contact on your phone.
- Agree how to identify your driver or meet your host before travelling.
- Download a map for the area you need and check that it opens offline.
- If you plan to buy locally, confirm a suitable agency and the required documents in advance.
If you choose a travel eSIM, follow its installation and activation instructions while you still have an internet connection available. Installation does not prove that the line is connected in Guinea: after arrival, select it for mobile data and check that an internet page loads. Network availability depends on the plan, device and local reception.
Payment and top-ups are separate questions
Foreign Visa or Mastercard acceptance for an initial tourist SIM purchase has not been confirmed. Ask the branch which payment methods it accepts for the SIM and bundle, rather than assuming that an online payment option also works at the counter.
Areeba advertises MoMo services, including recharge and merchant payments. Those services do not establish that an arriving visitor can immediately open a wallet or use a foreign card to fund it. Wallet registration and SIM registration may involve different requirements.
For any prepaid offer, check the expiry of both the data bundle and the underlying account. Find out how to recharge before travelling away from the shop, and whether the method depends on a local wallet or another person’s phone.

FAQ
Is MTN still the name to use when buying a SIM in Guinea?
The former MTN Guinea business now operates as Areeba Guinée. MTN completed the sale to the State of Guinea in December 2024. Check current Areeba offers and assistance rather than relying on old MTN instructions.
Can a tourist register a Guinea SIM with only a passport?
We have not confirmed a current passport-only rule. Ask the operator which original documents and additional information your chosen agency requires for a short-term foreign visitor.
Can I buy a SIM at Conakry Airport after a late arrival?
Current counter hours, stock and registration availability have not been verified. Arrange an alternative arrival plan instead of relying on a late-night airport purchase.
Does a NoveSIM Guinea eSIM include a local number?
No. We provide mobile data, not a Guinean phone number, standard voice calls or carrier SMS. Internet messaging and calling apps can use the data connection; ordinary local calling requires a separate service.
Final Recommendation
Choose SIM cards in Guinea according to the service you need. If ordinary local calls matter, establish the visitor registration requirements with Orange or Areeba before making a shop visit. If maps and internet messages are enough, compare a data-only travel eSIM with your included roaming.
For NoveSIM, verify phone compatibility and the specific Guinea plan, then follow its installation and activation instructions. Keep your home line’s roaming settings separate so that selecting travel data does not inadvertently enable home-plan data roaming.
Leave with a saved transfer contact and accommodation address, whichever option you choose. That preparation gives you a practical way to reach your accommodation while resolving any unconfirmed shop, payment or connection details.
